Tin powder, solder powder and solder tin powder overlap conceptually, but they are not exactly the same thing. Solder tin powder is a tin-based alloy powder within the solder powder family that is specifically used for electronic soldering, with a melting point below 300 °C, whereas tin powder is a powder made of pure tin and is one of the raw materials for both solder powder and solder tin powder. Solder powder does not refer only to tin-based alloy powder: it also includes high-melting-point metal powders such as copper-based, nickel-based and iron-based powders, with a much wider melting range of roughly 100-1000 °C. The details are as follows:

I. Definitions and Composition

Tin powder: a powder made of pure tin. Its main component is metallic tin (Sn); it has a metallic lustre and is soft and highly malleable.

Solder powder: the metal powder in soldering materials that is used to form the solder joint. Its composition varies widely - it may be a pure metal powder or an alloy powder, such as tin-lead alloy, tin-silver-copper alloy, copper powder, silver powder and so on.

Solder tin powder: specifically a tin-based alloy powder used for electronic soldering, and one type of solder powder. It is usually an alloy of tin with other metals (such as silver and copper), processed into fine particles by atomisation and similar methods.

II. Application Fields

Tin powder:

Used to manufacture solder paste, electrical carbon products, friction materials, oil-impregnated bearings and powder-metallurgy structural materials.

In the electronics industry it serves as a high-purity reagent, for example in making resistors, capacitors, printed circuit boards (PCBs) and other electronic components.

With the trend towards lead-free manufacturing, tin powder is used ever more widely in the production of electronic products. Its non-toxic and environmentally friendly nature also gives it potential applications in packaging for the pharmaceutical, chemical, light-industry, food, healthcare and art-supply sectors.

Solder powder:

Widely used in all kinds of soldering scenarios, including electronic soldering, automotive manufacturing, aerospace and other fields.

Solder powders of different compositions serve different soldering needs: low-temperature solder powder for conventional electronic assembly, high-temperature solder powder for high-reliability fields such as automotive, and high-melting-point metal powders for areas such as 3D printing.

Solder tin powder:

An indispensable joining material in the electronics industry, mainly used to formulate solder paste.

The quality of solder tin powder directly affects the quality of the solder paste and, in turn, the quality of circuit-board soldering.

With the growth of surface-mount technology (SMT) in the electronics industry, the use of solder tin powder keeps expanding and its prospects are increasingly broad.

III. Preparation Methods and Characteristics

Tin powder: can be produced by a number of methods, such as gas atomisation and centrifugal atomisation. Its particles come in many shapes, including spherical and irregular forms, with a wide particle-size distribution.

Solder powder: preparation methods vary with composition and application; the common ones are atomisation, mechanical milling and chemical methods. The properties of solder powder (melting point, wettability, mechanical strength and so on) depend on its composition and its manufacturing process.

Solder tin powder: the main preparation methods are gas atomisation, centrifugal atomisation and ultrasonic atomisation. Among these, solder tin powder made by ultrasonic atomisation offers low oxygen content, good sphericity and a uniform particle-size distribution, and represents the international trend. The properties of solder tin powder (particle-size distribution, sphericity, oxygen content and so on) strongly influence the printing performance of solder paste and the quality of soldering.

As a globally leading provider of microelectronics and semiconductor packaging material solutions, Fitech's tin powder and solder tin powder enjoy broad recognition within the industry. The company not only has a complete product line ranging from alloy solder powders to ultra-fine soldering application products, but has also mastered advanced powder-making technologies, such as the liquid-phase forming technology for spherical alloy powders, and is able to produce T2-T10 ultra-fine alloy solder powders across the full size range. This technological edge gives Fitech's products outstanding performance in particle-size control, sphericity and oxygen content, meeting the demand in microelectronics and semiconductor packaging for high-precision, high-reliability soldering materials.
